Comments: “Very fine” graded cased British proofed five -shot Colt Model 1849 Pocket percussion revolver s/n 211xxx E, with 6 inch barrel, manufactured circa 1862. The barrel address reads: “ADDRESS COL SAML COLTNEW-YORK US, AMERICA”. This London Agency Pocket has British Proof stamps to the barrel and cylinder, which is in excellent original condition. Retaining around 85% original blue to the 5 shot cylinder, 90-95% to barrel with some small spots of flaking to blue on left side of muzzle and flashing to forcing cone. Brass grip-straps and large trigger-guard. The frame and loading lever also retain about 90% original strong bright casehardening. The one-piece walnut grips display excellent original varnish, with minor storage marks. The cylinder scene itself is about 98% visible with 3 of the 5 cylinder pins remain near perfect, 2 a bit mushroomed. The screw heads are excellent and the action is in good working order. Serial numbers all matching. The bore rates 9/10, bright with sharp rifling.
Cased in original oak case lined in wine coloured velvet material displaying loading instructions label, ( label possibly a reproduction), with excellent accessories including: “JAMES DIXON / & SONS / SHEFFIELD” bag type flask in excellent condition, excellent ‘COLT’S PATENT’ .31 calibre mould for casting a round and conical shaped lead bullet, and nipple key. All accessories are in excellent condition.
Overall, an excellent cased British proofed Colt Model 1849 London Pocket, manufactured at Colt’s manufactory in Hartford and shipped to London, with rare and desirable six inch barrel in 1867. Six inch barrel Pockets Colts with New York barrel address and British Proof stamps are rare and very hard to find.
If you like quality guns, then this is for you. It will be difficult to find one this good anywhere else.
Colt gun cases are rare in themselves, so a set like this may not be available again for some time. One of my favourite pieces, and reluctant sale. Don’t let it get away.
